Leadership during Crisis, COVID 19

My name is Rita Ledbetter - a CNM in full scope practice for over 27 years in Illinois.  We are blessed to be able to care for families at their most vulnerable times.  Now we are feeling vulnerable with all the changes in our nation due to this virus.

I served in Haiti after the earthquake.  I knew I had to go.  Women were delivering babies on the roadside unattended.  The nation was chaotic without food or even Tylenol.  Cesareans were done with threat of house lights going down  so we operated with headlamps.

Sometimes we have to run toward the roar of fear.  When we run into the roar we find that it isn’t so bad.  We have a community around us.  We know our stuff and it shows.  We are overwhelmed but at the same time empowered from within to be strong and have enormous valor.

The families that we work with need us.  We, as leaders and influencers, need to be creative.  Listen to that inner voice... it will lead the way.  Show no fear.  Encourage others to be at peace.  This too will pass.  Right now we are just flattening the curve with drastic measures so infections will not over tax hospitals until it runs it course and we adjust to a new normal.

There is a song out nowadays by Lauren Daigle, “Look up Child".  Let’s remember our purpose and shine brightly for those we serve.
